Sex, lies and the Lazy K ranch (part 2)
Chapter Two
Within a few hours the inevitable decision was reached, and in what seemed like a fleeting moment he felt the wheels of the 767 leave the ground. The thud of the undercarriage closing beneath him signalled the start of his flight to Kentucky..and who knows what. In those few hours, he once more studied the files, checking every little detail for any clue. This woman had been born outside the United States. She shared the same Father as Komorov, but perhaps did not share the same criminal tendencies…but that was yet to be proved. A note within the file indicated the FBI had reason to suspect high profile doping had been going on within the Kentucky Breeders Association. One of the ranches mentioned was…'The Lazy K'…and you guess it, it was owned by none other that Marienka Korenski. Further in the file, a rather bizarre note seemed to indicate that Korenski had some tenuous links with the Gandini Brothers. Rumours abounded that they had rescued her, out of the kindness of their hearts perhaps, from a life of cheap porn movies and club land sex show's. The Gandini's never did anything out of kindness! They always had an angle on every deal they worked…As some kind of payment…perhaps a mutually agreed deal… who knows what, the Gandini's had used Korenski's little known talents with horses, to create a racing stable. It seemed that the family roots went way back to Cossack tribesmen.
Angelo and Fredo had both enjoyed the high life, mixing with the rich and famous and allowing themselves an air of respectability. Besides it was another way of recycling their wealth legitimately, right under the noses of the US Government and the universally unloved I.R.S. It also played to the Gandini's unlimited self vanity, the sport of Kings did seem one easy way to gain public adoration, and if that meant actually winning every race to gain friendships and favours then that’s what they did! The FBI had suspected for some time that the East Coast mob, and in particular the Gandini's, had fixed many premier horse races, using various methods to dope their way into the winning enclosure. Officer thought for a moment. There were grounds for jealousy here…betrayal of the deepest kind…perhaps Korenski had a thing for one or both of the Brothers? Komorov perhaps felt family honour had been soiled? Or was it perhaps one or both of the Gandini boys' had finally become excess baggage in the game, and it was now becoming time to dump them? The question was…who had the motive here and the most to gain? Twists and turns bud, twists and turns! ….This was a case within a case…Just a few hours now and he'd be on terra firma once more. Then the chase for answers would begin…
On time, his United Airlines flight touched down in Louisville. The arrivals terminal was crowded with Government and Party activists…there was an election for State Governor going on right now. Posters everywhere declared this was going to be a landslide victory for the Republican candidate, Juan-Jose' Martinez. Martinez was likely to win, and become their first Governor of Mexican descent. Officer didn’t involve himself in politics much, but did recall the name. It took a moment to think, then he remembered a mention of Martinez and the FBI files he'd read earlier…A popular man, with interests in many subjects….business connections for sure and many friends in high places. This included the Kentucky Breeders Association. A clue perhaps?
Once through Baggage claim, he was immediately paged via a terminal phone, and the news from New York wasn’t good at all. Within hours of the Gandini 'supposed' murder…Strange reports had come in from various parts of Down Town. It seemed that Chilli dog vendors all across Lower Manhattan had pieces of Bambino! Yeah, Gandini had been duely processed through the meat chain and now found himself being eaten by many of the good citizens of New York! Proof came with the indigestible solid gold pinkie ring that found its way into one poor saps lunchtime order! DNA tests on samples collected from various other hot dog vendors surely did wrap it up within an hour or two. So…Gandini was indeed dead, although it was going to be a hell of a funeral with next to no body! Officer couldn’t help but smile..picturing a whole mess of $4.99 carry out boxes being the only way of getting the remaining bits and pieces of Gandini to the cemetery….
Collecting the keys to a car from the Hertz desk..Officer started his journey. It was now a hunt…a hunt for evidence and truth. More importantly the hunt for the murderer, most likely now being Komorov. If his worst fears were born out, then Alexi Komorov now had the whole stinking game to himself. Nobody stood in his way save perhaps for Fredo, and crime would once again slip out of control. A hardened granite look overtook him, his eyes now steeling every inch of the road ahead… a measure of concentration emblazoned across his face now, a look of determination, of fiery will and an uncertainty of the unknown …Officer69 drove from the terminal and headed South out of Louisville, his destination…The Lazy K ranch……..
